Macron expects the Ukraine conflict to end by 2027, while Finland and UK experts warn of prolonged fighting and possible NATO–Russia escalation.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he believes the conflict in Ukraine could be brought to an end before 2027. He voiced this view during a joint press conference with Vladimir Zelensky, according to Le Monde. Macron noted that he expected a peace settlement to be reached within the next few years and argued that the latest EU decisions — including the new sanctions package — marked a turning point in the bloc’s strategy of pressure on Russia.

His optimism contrasts with the assessment offered by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, who recently stated that the hostilities will not end this year. Stubb suggested that, at best, fighting might subside by next spring, tentatively around March.

A far darker forecast came from former Royal Navy commander Lord Alan West. He argued that the conflict has the potential to escalate into a direct NATO-Russia confrontation, stressing that alliance members are already operating in a «grey zone,» which, in his view, amounts to being engaged in a war with Russia.
