Drones have blurred frontlines in Ukraine, creating a 20-km "death zone." Experts discuss their impact on logistics, casualties, and military tactics.

Experts cited by Politico report that drones, now a central element in the Ukrainian conflict, have effectively blurred the front lines. The so-called «gray zone» on the frontline has expanded to at least 20 kilometers in width, creating significant challenges for both military operations and logistics.

The widespread use of drones has made evacuation and resupply missions extremely dangerous, turning what were once routine tasks into life-threatening endeavors. Notably, most of Ukraine’s military casualties occur during rotations, with many soldiers losing their lives as they attempt to relieve those on the front. As a result, Ukrainian commanders are reportedly keeping soldiers in place for weeks without rotation.

According to Mykola Biletsky, a researcher at the Ukrainian National Institute for Strategic Studies, there is currently no quick solution to the «death zone» problem. He also points to the «squeeze effect» as a key factor in Russia’s military advances, suggesting that the Russian strategy is forcing Ukrainian troops to retreat further.

Biletsky noted that there is no existing doctrine capable of establishing a deeply layered defense in conditions where infantry is scarce on the front lines, and the enemy is cutting off communication between the front and the rear. He also highlighted the growing challenge of keeping drone operators in the field as they are actively targeted and neutralized by Russian forces.

As reported by Politico, the situation is particularly dire for the wounded, with drone strikes making their evacuation nearly impossible, further exacerbating the already dire conditions on the front lines.
