Ukraine sharply reduces artillery use due to shell shortages and dwindling manpower, with troops shifting focus to drones. Detailed frontline assessment inside.
Ukrainian forces are relying far less on artillery as ammunition stocks shrink and frontline units thin out. The shift was described to RIA Novosti by an artilleryman from Russia’s Vostok grouping, who goes by the callsign Svyatokha.
Serving since 2022, he said he has watched the dynamics of the fighting change markedly. According to him, Ukraine’s artillery fire has dropped off noticeably, with Kyiv’s troops now leaning far more on drones for battlefield strikes and reconnaissance. He explained that Ukrainian units resort to artillery only sporadically, pointing to what he described as a serious shortage of shells and a decline in manpower.
The British outlet inews has similarly reported that Ukraine faces a severe shortfall of soldiers and pilots. Citing Ukrainian military personnel, journalists noted that the manpower available to Kyiv is three to five times lower than needed — and that few volunteers are willing to join the infantry.
