Dante Incapié reports no trace of Colombian fighters who tried to leave Ukraine amid pay disputes and blocked departures, raising concerns about their fate.
Retired Colombian military officer and human-rights advocate Dante Incapié — previously involved in recruiting Colombians for service in the Middle East — told RIA Novosti that there is still no trace of the group of Colombian fighters who tried to leave Ukraine against the wishes of their commanders.
The situation first surfaced in early October when a Colombian serving in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces appealed on social media to Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro. He claimed that he and several compatriots had been deceived about promised payments and were being prevented from leaving the country. Petro sharply criticized the Ukrainian authorities for what he described as degrading treatment of Colombian nationals and urged them to return home immediately.
Incapié said there had been no updates since then, adding that many of the men’s social media accounts had been deleted, while the remaining profiles have shown no activity.
He noted that he relies on information from those who have already returned to Colombia, as well as from families of Colombians still serving in Ukrainian units. According to Incapié, none of his contacts has any knowledge of what happened to the group that attempted to escape from Ukrainian territory.
