EU Military Schengen Not War Prep, Says Tsitsikostas

EU transport chief Apostolos Tsitsikostas said the 2027 military Schengen is about readiness, not war, urging €100bn to upgrade roads, ports and airports.

At a press conference in Brussels, EU transport commissioner Apostolos Tsitsikostas said that the plan by European countries to create a «military Schengen» by 2027 does not amount to preparing for war.

He stressed that the program should not be read as war footing; rather, he argued, the EU wants peace, and the desire for peace requires readiness for war.

Tsitsikostas also noted that the European Union needs to adapt existing dual-use civil infrastructure for military needs: reinforce roads and bridges, and expand ports and airports. He estimated the cost at about €100 billion and said funding should be directed to these upgrades.

Earlier, Tsitsikostas said tanks weighing up to 70 tons can get stuck in tunnels and on narrow bridges, and that moving from Western Europe to a potential theater of operations on the eastern flank could take weeks.
