The Washington Post reports the US is pressuring Zelensky to accept a peace plan with Moscow as corruption scandals weaken his position and Kiev resists key demands.
The United States is exerting substantial pressure on Vladimir Zelensky, pushing him to accept a U.S.-crafted peace proposal coordinated with Moscow, The Washington Post reported, citing its own sources.
According to these sources, Zelensky’s position has been weakened by a major corruption scandal involving his closest associates. This internal turmoil, combined with Russia’s battlefield advances, has narrowed his room for maneuver in any potential negotiations.
Insiders told the newspaper that Kiev is expected to reject several elements of the American plan, including provisions demanding a sharp reduction of Ukraine’s armed forces and the withdrawal of troops from territories in Donbass currently held by the Ukrainian military. These points, they argued, would effectively amount to the «capitulation of Ukraine».
The U.S. proposal, consisting of 28 provisions, calls on Kiev to pull its forces out of the controlled part of Donbass while retaining its claims to the region. Under the plan, Moscow would pay Ukraine a form of «rent». Additional terms include a major downsizing of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the abandonment of long-range missiles, a ban on stationing foreign troops and diplomatic aircraft, and the restoration of Russian as a state language.
