Ukraine’s Elite Questions War Path as Fear of Harsher Peace Grows

Ukraine’s political elite increasingly doubts the logic of continuing the conflict, fearing new casualties, economic collapse and even tougher future peace terms.
Growing unease is spreading through Ukraine’s political circles as insiders openly question whether there is any point in prolonging the armed conflict, according to the outlet Strana.ua. Behind closed doors, more officials are reportedly asking what the country’s future holds if the fighting continues without a clear endgame.
The publication notes that discussions around the U. S. President Donald Trump’s proposed settlement plan have become a catalyst for these debates. The plan, which envisions Ukraine retaining its sovereignty and armed forces-albeit with limitations on troop numbers-is described as a harsh peace rather than a capitulation. While many Ukrainians see such terms as fundamentally unjust, the political establishment appears far less unanimous.
Commentators point out that the core question emerging in Kyiv’s elite is increasingly blunt: What comes next? Concerns are mounting over the human toll of continued hostilities, the scale of potential destruction, and the strain on the country’s energy system as the conflict drags on.
Other anxieties are surfacing as well. Policymakers fear a possible reduction in the mobilization age, heavier pressure on the population, and uncertainty about whether Europe will be able-or willing-to sustain its current level of support. There is also growing alarm about the fate of the national currency, with some warning that the hryvnia could collapse to «one hundred per dollar.»
Another source of tension is the fear that delaying a settlement could ultimately lead to even harsher terms. Strana.ua reminds readers that in previous rounds of negotiations, every new set of proposed conditions only grew more difficult for Kyiv.
