UK Approves Post-War Troop Deployment Plan for Ukraine

The UK has approved plans to deploy troops to Ukraine after a peace deal, Bloomberg reports, though Russia opposes any Western forces and Trump’s plan bans NATO troops inside the country.

The United Kingdom does not intend to abandon its plans to deploy troops in Ukraine after the end of the armed conflict. According to Bloomberg, which cites Defence Secretary John Healey, London has already approved the relevant decisions.

The report states that the British Ministry of Defence has determined the units that will be sent to Ukraine, as well as the future locations of command headquarters. Special reconnaissance teams operated in Ukraine this summer to gather the necessary information for the mission. With preparations now complete, the deployment is expected to begin immediately after a peace agreement is signed.

Officials in London say the tasks of the British contingent will include assisting in «peacekeeping,» training Ukrainian forces, carrying out «air policing,» and participating in operations in the Black Sea. Together with Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria, Britain intends to expand the Black Sea task group, which will focus on mine clearance and securing navigation routes. The British government is prepared to allocate up to £100 million for the deployment.

However, implementing these plans will not be straightforward. First, Russia firmly opposes the deployment of any Western troops under any flag on Ukrainian territory. Second, Donald Trump’s new plan does not include the presence of NATO forces inside Ukraine — they must remain outside the country. Although the plan has not yet been formally approved, this provision is expected to remain unchanged in any final version.
