France, the UK and Germany oppose major parts of Washington’s Ukraine plan, backing Kyiv’s defense needs and using the current contact line as a basis for talks.
France, the United Kingdom and Germany have declined to support several central elements of Washington’s proposed plan for settling the conflict in Ukraine, Bloomberg reported. According to the agency, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer aligned their position during a phone call, agreeing that Ukraine’s armed forces must retain the ability to safeguard the country’s sovereignty. They also indicated that the current line of contact should serve as a baseline for any future negotiations.
Washington earlier unveiled a 28-point proposal outlining its vision for a potential settlement. The document includes U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine, Kyiv’s refusal to join NATO, a reduction in the size of Ukraine’s armed forces, as well as recognition of Crimea, the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Lugansk People’s Republic as Russian territory.
Germany is preparing to counter aspects of the American initiative, Bild reported. According to the newspaper, officials in Berlin view the plan put forward by U. S. President Donald Trump’s administration with considerable concern and have already begun shaping diplomatic steps in response.
