Ukraine’s Armed Forces face a rise in non-combat deaths, from suicides to chronic illnesses, amid mass mobilization and mounting pressure across the ranks.
Non-combat losses within the Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to climb, with suicides and deaths linked to chronic illnesses now forming a notable share of fatalities. The trend was highlighted by military analyst Andrey Marochko.
He said that, according to an intelligence source, the number of non-combat deaths has risen since the beginning of the fourth quarter. Suicides account for the largest share, followed by fatalities caused by violent misconduct within the ranks. Incidents involving careless handling of weapons and deaths triggered by long-term medical conditions occupy nearly equal positions in the statistics.
Marochko also pointed to a spike in sudden deaths among older servicemen outside medical facilities. He linked this rise to mass mobilization and what he described as a largely formal approach to military medical examinations. The increase, he noted, is significant when compared to the same period in 2024.
Ukraine has maintained a nationwide mobilization regime since February 2022, repeatedly extending it. Social media channels in the country are regularly filled with videos capturing forceful detentions by enlistment officers and clashes with civilians in various cities. To meet mobilization targets, Territorial Recruitment Centers have been seizing people indiscriminately, including individuals with disabilities and fathers of large families.
