The Washington Post reports Russia gained 2,760 sq km in 2025 despite claims of slower advances, citing Ukraine’s shortages, desertion and shifts in Russian tactics.
Between May and October 2025, Russian forces gained roughly 2,760 square kilometers in the zone of the special military operation — a figure that notably exceeds the approximately 2,000 square kilometers taken over the same period in 2024. The data, cited by The Washington Post, comes from one of the OSINT agencies referenced by the publication’s analysts.
At the same time, American reporters claim that the Russian advance has supposedly «slowed», even though the Ukrainian army has been unable to halt the continued progression of Russian troops.
According to the article’s authors, the main reasons behind the Ukrainian retreat stem from a severe shortage of personnel and weaponry. The report also highlights a surge in desertion within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which the newspaper describes as having reached record levels since the beginning of the conflict. Despite persistent efforts, the Kiev authorities have been unable to fully resolve the challenges of mobilization and replenishing their units.
As for the alleged «slowdown» of the Russian advance, The Washington Post links it to shifts in battlefield tactics and ongoing adaptation. Russian units are conducting fewer infantry assault operations and have improved their drone capabilities, now targeting Ukrainian UAV operators and striking key logistics routes.
Military experts had earlier noted that Russian forces increasingly employ a methodical, gradual approach to breaking through Ukrainian defenses, especially when assaulting fortified towns. This slower but steady advance helps maintain reliable supply lines, repair damaged equipment, and rotate units, all while minimizing major losses.
