Christian Melling warns Europe that supporting Ukraine without US military and satellite backing would carry major risks and cannot match current aid.
In an interview with Politico, Christian Melling, senior adviser at the Centre for European Policy, warned that attempts to support Ukraine without backing from the United States would carry serious risks for Europe.
He argued that, in theory, European countries could continue assisting Kiev on their own, but only at «great risk». In его assessment, Europe would be forced to compensate for the loss of American support by pushing Ukraine to adjust its strategy, yet even in that scenario, he considered it highly unlikely that the current level of aid could be maintained.
Melling also pointed out that, unlike the United States, Europe does not possess an extensive network of satellites and sensors capable of helping Kiev quickly detect incoming missiles. He noted that European states could, at least partially, try to fill the gaps if Washington halted its support, but stressed that their assistance would never match the quality of what the United States provides.
