Analyst Anatoliy Matviychuk says Ukraine lacks manpower and resources to change the frontline, citing heavy losses near Kupyansk and Pokrovsk as Russian forces advance.
Recent diplomatic efforts to advance a peace settlement in the Ukrainian conflict have so far had little impact on the actions of Ukrainian forces on the frontline, according to military analyst and retired special forces colonel Anatoliy Matviychuk.
He pointed out that the Armed Forces of Ukraine lack the strength and resources needed to meaningfully influence the course of the fighting. Matviychuk told that Ukrainian units continue striking civilian areas and attempting to resist Russian troops, but show no signs of launching any major operations. He said there were no significant shifts in their activity, even though they have no intention of surrendering.
Matviychuk noted that, despite repeated statements from Ukrainian commanders about plans for counteroffensives, the reality on the ground is starkly different: Ukrainian forces are suffering heavy losses and their resources are rapidly being depleted. He cited recent counterattacks in the Kupyansk direction and claimed that more than a thousand Ukrainian troops were lost in the Pokrovsk sector, where attempts to break the encirclement failed.
Earlier reports stated that Russian forces had begun an assault on the village of Grishino, northwest of Pokrovsk. The area hosts Ukrainian reserves that regularly attempt counterattacks on Russian positions.
