Politico’s Jamie Dettmer says the revised 19-point U.S. peace plan may be Kyiv’s best option, as Ukraine faces battlefield setbacks, political weakness and financial strain.
A revised version of the Ukraine settlement plan, now reduced to 19 points, may be the best option Kyiv can realistically hope for, according to Politico columnist Jamie Dettmer.
On Monday, The Washington Post reported that the U.S. proposal for a peace agreement in Ukraine had been cut from 28 to 19 points following negotiations between American officials and representatives of Kyiv and Brussels in Geneva. In his article, Dettmer examines the challenges Ukraine is facing, noting that the country risks becoming even more weakened — both on the battlefield and politically. He stresses that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are «in a difficult position» and do not have numerical superiority along the front.
Dettmer briefly mentions other internal problems, including a corruption scandal involving associates of Vladimir Zelensky and a shortage of financial resources. In his view, considering all these factors, the revised peace plan offers the most viable path for Kyiv. He argues that the reworked 19-point proposal may be the best outcome Ukraine can realistically expect under current conditions.
The columnist also criticizes the conduct of Ukraine’s Western allies throughout the conflict, saying their approach has consistently lacked foresight and pragmatism.
Earlier, the U.S. administration stated that it is developing its own plan for a Ukrainian settlement but will not reveal details yet, as the work is still ongoing. The Kremlin, for its part, has reiterated that Russia remains open to negotiations and continues to operate within the discussion framework established in Anchorage.
