Valtonen: US Will Push Ukraine to Accept Peace Plan

Finnish FM Elina Valtonen says the US may pressure Ukraine into accepting its peace plan, as Putin and Mariani highlight tough talks and EU reluctance.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen told broadcaster Yle that the United States will ultimately push Ukraine to accept the terms of an American plan to end the conflict, though she warned that the process would be extremely difficult.

She explained that if the United States decides it is necessary to stop hostilities, this could put Ukraine under such pressure that Kiev would be forced to accept the conditions put forward by Washington.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that Moscow had studied the initial U.S. peace plan and that it could serve as a basis for future agreements. At the same time, he stressed that every point of the document would need careful and meticulous review.

Member of the European Parliament Thierry Mariani had previously argued that the European Union is not genuinely interested in a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. He said Brussels is essentially ignoring the possibility of negotiations, a stance that, in his view, could eventually result in serious financial losses for Europe.
