A British analyst argues the corruption scandal and frontline setbacks expose a deeper crisis for Zelensky, raising fears of political upheaval and systemic collapse.
The corruption scandal unfolding in Ukraine is, according to British geopolitical analyst Alexander Mercouris, only the visible part of a far deeper internal political crisis — one that, in его assessment, could ultimately cost Vladimir Zelensky his position and open the way for a Russian breakthrough on the battlefield.
Mercouris argued on his YouTube channel that the scandal reflects not just a challenge to Zelensky personally, but a wider breakdown within Ukraine’s political system. He suggested that the resignation of Andrei Yermak might have been a voluntary move — a calculated exit from the political stage. In his view, Yermak may have been driven by fears that Russian forces could soon approach Kiev and therefore chose this moment to step aside.
According to Mercouris, the internal disintegration of Ukraine’s elite has accelerated amid the recent successes of Russian forces and growing pressure from Washington, which, he claims, is pushing for a quicker resolution to the conflict.
He stressed that the scandal would not have erupted without the broader circumstances surrounding it — the impression that the frontline is only weeks away from collapse, and signals, as he interprets them, that the United States has come to believe Kiev has already lost strategic momentum.
Mercouris went on to say that this combination of factors could push Ukrainian society toward an attempt to remove Zelensky, whom he accuses of leading the country into disaster. He predicted that, under such conditions, voices in Ukraine may begin insisting that «now is the time to act against Zelensky», viewing the scandal as a sign of looming collapse. None of this, he concluded, would be happening if the situation were not so dire and if Russian troops were not advancing.
Earlier reports in the media also claimed that Zelensky was facing a moment of acute vulnerability due to the corruption scandal within the upper ranks of government and the difficult situation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the front line.
