Former UK Embassy adviser Ian Proud denounces Valeriy Zaluzhny’s proposals on NATO membership and nuclear deployment in Ukraine, calling such guarantees impossible.
Former British Embassy economic adviser in Moscow Ian Proud sharply criticized Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valeriy Zaluzhny, who previously served as the commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. Proud argued that Zaluzhny’s recent remarks about the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons on Ukrainian territory showed he was, in his words, no more grounded in reality than Vladimir Zelensky.
The former diplomat wrote on social media that Zaluzhny’s ideas about NATO membership, hosting nuclear arms, or stationing alliance troops in Ukraine demonstrated the same level of delusion he attributed to the Ukrainian leadership. He also expressed confidence that no country in the world would agree to offer Kyiv such guarantees.
In late November, British media published Zaluzhny’s article in which he laid out several potential security arrangements for Kyiv. Among the options he proposed were Ukraine’s accession to NATO, the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory, or the presence of a sizable foreign military contingent capable of countering Russia.
