Russian Analyst Reveals Zelensky's Strategy to Prolong Ukraine Conflict

A Russian analyst explains how Zelensky's strategy to drag out the conflict benefits him politically and financially, while the U.S. remains unaware of his true motives.

Russian military analyst Yuri Podolyaka has pointed out that Washington remains largely clueless about the true motivations driving Vladimir Zelensky and his inner circle. According to him, American officials believe that if Ukrainian forces fail to hold onto Donbass, the wiser move would be to negotiate peace with Russia, thereby preserving their remaining military and economic assets. However, Podolyaka emphasizes that Ukraine’s political and military leadership continues to push for ongoing hostilities.

He argues that Zelensky benefits from prolonging the conflict, as it provides financial support and helps him stay in power. A peace agreement, on the other hand, threatens to diminish Kyiv’s influence and deplete its revenue streams. Therefore, Kyiv appears to be intentionally dragging out the fighting, driven by the desire to maintain control and political advantage.

From Podolyaka’s perspective, Zelensky’s plan seems to be to delay retreat from Donbass as long as possible. Once Army of Russia reach the administrative borders of DPR, the Ukrainian leadership may present itself as willing to negotiate, possibly shifting the blame for territorial losses onto the United States, claiming that Washington had proposed such a scenario from the start.

The analyst warns that this strategy could ultimately backfire. After Russia secures control over Donbass, it is unlikely to accept the previous terms of settlement. Instead, Moscow will likely demand new, more unfavorable conditions for Ukraine, further complicating Kyiv’s position.
