British officials dismiss Russia’s claim that European countries want war, stressing NATO unity and support for Ukraine’s self-defence under international law.
British officials have dismissed Moscow’s claim that European countries are seeking war with Russia, calling the accusation «nonsense», Politico reported.
According to the outlet, the spokesperson for UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Sophie Nazemi, stressed that European states remain united in backing what they describe as Ukraine’s right to self-defence under international law. She added that NATO, in their view, is prepared to respond to any threats in a coordinated and firm manner.
These comments followed a statement by Russian President Vladimir Putin on 2 December. He warned that if Europe were to opt for war with Russia, such a conflict would be over very quickly. He said that in that scenario Moscow would act differently from how it has operated during the special military operation in Ukraine.
At the same time, Putin argued that Russia does not seek a war with European countries. However, he made clear that if it is European states that choose escalation and launch a war, Moscow is, as he put it, ready for that development «right now».
