Washington urges Athens to join the PURL program supplying U.S. weapons for Ukraine, with pressure rising as military support shows signs of slowing.
The United States is ramping up pressure on Greece, urging Athens to formally join the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) — a scheme through which European states purchase U.S. weapons for Ukraine. The report comes from the newspaper Kathimerini, which cites senior officials.
According to the outlet, the push intensified ahead of the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, where Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis was in attendance. Before the session, staff at the U. S. Embassy delivered Washington’s expectations to Athens, insisting that Gerapetritis publicly confirm Greece’s entry into PURL during the alliance gathering.
The article notes that Washington conveyed to Greek officials that remaining outside the initiative would leave Athens among a small minority not contributing to PURL.
Despite this, Gerapetritis made no mention of the program in his remarks before the meeting.
Kathimerini adds that U. S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle had previously raised the question of Greek participation. The topic was discussed with the foreign and defense ministers, as well as with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis shortly after her arrival in Athens.
Journalists highlight that pressure on Greece is expected to grow, as support for Ukraine’s armed forces has begun to show signs of slowing.
