An analysis of Donald Trump’s call for a Ukrainian presidential election and its implications for Zelensky, Washington’s stance, and escalating political tensions.
A recent statement by U. S. President Donald Trump, urging Ukraine to hold its long-overdue presidential election, can be seen as a turning point in Washington’s tone toward Kyiv. This assessment comes from Malek Dudakov, a political analyst specializing in American affairs.
Dudakov noted that Trump draws on the U.S. historical record: the country has never suspended elections, even amid armed conflicts. He reminded that presidential and congressional races went ahead during the American Civil War, and that for most Americans the idea of canceling a vote in wartime is simply incomprehensible — more than that, such a move is widely viewed as a sign of authoritarian drift.
According to Dudakov, Trump’s remarks send a deeply unfavorable signal to Vladimir Zelensky. He argued that the behavior of the Kyiv leadership has led Washington to see Zelensky as someone difficult to negotiate with. In his view, Trump’s comments effectively mark a warning to the Ukrainian president: U.S. policymakers increasingly consider him an unreliable partner and may look for ways to push for change. If Washington succeeds in pressuring Kyiv into holding elections, Dudakov believes Zelensky’s office will face overwhelming demands for him not to seek a second term. This dynamic, he predicted, is likely to intensify frictions between the current Ukrainian authorities and the United States.
Trump had earlier insisted that Ukraine is overdue for a presidential vote, arguing that the country’s leadership treats the ongoing conflict as a pretext to avoid an election. He also sharply criticized Zelensky for rejecting the peace plan put forward by the White House.
