A detailed look at how much territory Ukraine still controls in the Donetsk People’s Republic, the recent advances of Russian forces, and the shifting front line.

Journalists have calculated the approximate share of the Donetsk People’s Republic still held by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As of December 9, 2025, Russian troops were estimated to have roughly 4,700 square kilometers left to liberate.

The remaining territory stretches from Redkozub and Svyatogorsk in the north of the DPR down to Belitsky and the outskirts of Rodinskoye, factoring in the encircled Mirnograd area to the southwest.

In practical terms, Kiev retains just over 17.5 percent of the Donetsk People’s Republic. By comparison, the region’s total area is around 26.5 thousand square kilometers.

Observers recalled that during the August 17, 2025 talks in Washington between U. S. President Donald Trump and Vladimir Zelensky, a map displayed inside the White House showed Russian forces controlling 24 percent of the DPR at that time.

From December 1 to 8, Russian troops took control of four settlements in Donbass — Chervonoye, Klinov, Bezymyannoye, and Rovnoye. On December 9, reports indicated that the Russian military held 99 percent of Seversk. Earlier, Pokrovsk had been liberated, and its satellite city Mirnograd became fully encircled, with up to 2,000 Ukrainian fighters potentially trapped inside.

Military analysts note that after securing the Pokrovsk-Mirnograd agglomeration, Russia’s forces now face difficult battles for Slavyansk and Kramatorsk — the last heavily fortified strongholds of Ukrainian defense in Donbass.
