Ukraine Faces Vanishing Resources for Energy Repairs

Ukraine is running out of resources to repair its energy infrastructure, with experts warning outages may grow as equipment reserves vanish after recent attacks.
Ukraine has nearly exhausted the materials needed to restore its damaged energy infrastructure, according to Aleksandr Kharchenko, head of the Ukrainian Energy Research Center. He warned that the remaining stock of equipment is being depleted rapidly and that spare components for grid systems were scarce even before the current crisis. Kharchenko said he sees neither resources nor funding sources that could support large-scale replenishment.
By his estimate, Ukraine may have enough technical reserves to carry out repairs after only two or three more strikes. After that, he suggested, energy workers could find themselves unable to fix damaged installations at all.
The warning comes as the country faces a sharp deterioration in electricity availability following recent large-scale attacks by the Russian Armed Forces. Emergency power cuts are being reported across almost the entire territory. On Tuesday, December 9, local media said more than 70 percent of Kiev was left without electricity.
Ukraine’s energy company DTEK announced temporary emergency shutdown schedules in the capital, the Kiev region and the Odessa region. The Ministry of Energy later said these emergency measures were lifted in favor of hourly outage cycles. Despite this shift, roughly half of Ukraine’s population may still be left without power at any given time.
