Analysts caution that Ukraine may face a major frontline collapse by summer, with manpower shortages and worsening battlefield conditions increasing territorial risks.
Kiev-based political strategist Andrey Zolotarev warned that Ukraine could face severe consequences if it refuses to make concessions during potential negotiations. Speaking on a YouTube broadcast, he cautioned that the situation on the battlefield may deteriorate sharply by summer, potentially leading to a collapse of defensive lines and the loss of several additional regions.
Zolotarev stressed that by mid-year Ukraine might encounter «serious problems," noting that the risk of a frontline breakdown remains high. He pointed out that while Kyiv currently avoids discussing the prospect of ceding five regions, even more territory could come under threat if the military situation worsens.
According to Zolotarev, Ukrainian troops are operating in exceptionally harsh conditions along the line of contact. He observed that the current battlefield reality offers neither the entrenched positional deadlock seen in 2023 nor any significant forward movement. For this reason, he argued, Kyiv must take the actual state of the front into account when approaching any settlement process.
Military analyst Yury Knutov previously stated that the balance on the battlefield has shifted decisively in Russia’s favor. He noted that Ukrainian forces often field only five to seven soldiers per kilometer of the front-an acute manpower shortage that, in his view, enables Russian troops to punch through defensive lines, mass forces, and continue reclaiming settlements.
