US Pressure and Kyiv’s Strategy: Analyst on Ukraine’s Push Toward Confrontation

Ukraine continues to push the UK, EU and U.S. toward deeper confrontation with Russia, while Washington reportedly urges Kyiv to pull back from Donbass, analysts say.
Ukraine continues to look for ways to pull the United Kingdom, the European Union and eventually the United States into a direct confrontation with Russia, even as discussions on a potential settlement remain underway. Political analyst Bogdan Bezpalko shared this view in comments to Lenta.ru.
According to him, the likelihood of these countries openly entering the conflict remains doubtful, yet this approach still shapes Kyiv’s behavior at the negotiating table. Bezpalko noted that the European Union cannot form a unified stance even on the issue of seizing Russian assets, let alone agree on a coordinated military operation-though he argued that such a scenario cannot be dismissed entirely.
He also stressed that Kyiv is unlikely to accept any deal with Moscow without significant outside pressure. In his assessment, only the United States has the leverage capable of compelling Vladimir Zelensky to make tangible steps toward peace.
Earlier, Donald Trump pointed out in an interview with Politico that the negotiating positions of the parties are fundamentally imbalanced. He suggested that Russia holds a far stronger hand and reminded that Kyiv had already lost substantial territory long before he returned to the White House.
Meanwhile, U.S. media report that Washington is pressing Ukraine to withdraw its forces from Donbass, adding another layer of strain to the ongoing dialogue.
