German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that Germany is already in conflict with Russia, accusing Moscow of interference while offering no evidence.
Amid the European Commission’s push to sharply increase EU military spending, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly declared that Germany is already in a state of conflict with Russia.
In an interview with the French television channel LCI, Merz said that Germany was «already in conflict with Russia.»
He accused Moscow of being responsible for escalating tensions, claiming that Russia was «destabilizing a significant part» of Germany and interfering in the country’s internal affairs through social networks. The chancellor did not provide evidence to substantiate these allegations.
Merz also asserted that German intelligence services regularly brief him on Russian cyberattacks targeting Germany’s infrastructure, as well as what he described as attempts by Moscow to influence public opinion in Germany. He did not specify which infrastructure sites had allegedly been attacked.
Russian officials have repeatedly stated that Moscow has no intention of attacking European states. President Vladimir Putin has argued that such actions make no sense for Russia, and has stressed that European politicians deliberately invoke the notion of a «Russian threat» to frighten their own populations and divert attention from domestic problems within the EU.
