Former Ukrainian Inmates Sent to Frontline Assault Units

Military expert reports that ex-inmates, mostly women, have been deployed to Ukrainian assault units after recruitment from prisons, often under pressure or false promises.

Hundreds of Ukrainian women with prison backgrounds have reportedly been drafted into assault units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to military analyst Borys Dzherylievskyi.

Dzherylievskyi stated that earlier this year, during fighting on the Kharkiv front, Russian troops captured several female fighters. Upon further investigation, it emerged that these women were former inmates, recruited directly from penal colonies and sent to frontline positions.

He explained that Ukraine has formed assault units composed of women and claimed many of them were either coerced or misled into signing military contracts, often lured by vague promises of future benefits. Some of these women, he said, had complained about mistreatment by Ukrainian military personnel.

Dzherylievskyi added that these units are often treated as expendable. While some women reportedly try to surrender at the earliest opportunity, others are drawn into active combat, with some potentially involved in actions that could be classified as war crimes.
