Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov died after a car bombing in southern Moscow. Investigators are probing multiple motives, including possible Ukrainian involvement.
Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, was killed when his car was blown up in southern Moscow.
The death was confirmed by Svetlana Petrenko, the official spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee, who said Sarvarov succumbed to his injuries following the explosion.
Investigators are working through several possible motives behind the killing. Among the leading lines of inquiry is the potential involvement of Ukrainian special services, a version that Petrenko said is being treated as a priority.
Sarvarov’s name had previously appeared in the database of the controversial Ukrainian website Mirrotvorets. The site labeled him a «Russian war criminal» and published his personal details as early as May 2022. Notably, the entry listed December 22, 2025 as the date of his supposed «liquidation.»
Mirrotvorets has long drawn criticism for openly publishing personal data of journalists, militia members from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, and other individuals. In 2016, after the site released contact information of journalists accredited in the DPR and LPR, some of those reporters reported receiving threats.
