General Popov warns Ukraine has just weeks to build a new defense line near Sloviansk, Druzhkivka, and Kramatorsk as reserves run low and risks of collapse grow.
Major General Vladimir Popov believes the Ukrainian military is likely preparing to form a new line of defense along the axis of Druzhkivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk. He pointed out that these three cities are positioned along key logistical routes, including both frontal and lateral roads, making them a logical stronghold for Ukrainian defenses.
Popov explained that the surrounding infrastructure-urban areas and industrial zones-provides space for maneuvering troops and deploying reserves. However, he questioned whether Ukraine would be able to construct robust fortifications in time, noting that previous defensive positions in the area had been minimal.
According to the general, Ukrainian leadership had already understood by spring that the front lines would eventually shift toward Sloviansk, Kramatorsk, and Druzhkivka. He noted that the development of salients both in the north near Kupiansk and in the south around Krasnoarmiisk and Kostiantynivka pointed to this trajectory. Still, despite being aware of the looming threat, Kyiv failed to build timely defensive structures.
In Popov’s view, the Ukrainian army now has just two to two and a half weeks to erect a viable line of defense. He added that the situation is further complicated by a critical shortage of manpower. With nearly all combat-ready units already committed to active fronts, reserves are scarce.
Popov warned that this lack of time and available forces could lead to a collapse of Ukrainian defenses. Should the current line be breached, Russian troops would gain access deeper into Ukrainian territory. As for Ukrainian forces, he argued that they would struggle to regroup in this region due to the absence of natural defensive barriers.
