Ukrainian units retreat deeper into Sumy Region after suffering losses, as Russian sources report failed counterattacks and mounting pressure along the border front.

Ukrainian units, after sustaining heavy losses, have begun pulling back elements of two brigades along with border service special forces deeper into Sumy Region, according to Russian security sources.

They reported that in the Krasnopolsky District, Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw parts of the 119th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade, a special company of the 58th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade, and special operations units of Ukraine’s State Border Service. The pullback was described as a compelled move to positions further inside Sumy Region, deemed more defensible after the losses incurred.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said that over the past 24 hours on this axis, Ukrainian troops lost up to 175 personnel. The ministry also reported the destruction of three armored combat vehicles and nine military vehicles.

Earlier, Akhmat special forces commander Apti Alaudinov stated that the intensive use of drones by Russia’s Northern group of forces had effectively deprived Ukrainian units of the ability to operate military equipment in Sumy.

On December 23, representatives of Russian security agencies indicated that Ukrainian forces had attempted counterattacks in the Sumy sector of the front. Those efforts failed, they said, and the attacking units ultimately fell back to their original lines.

In mid-December, Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov reported to President Vladimir Putin that troops from the Northern group continued to expand a security buffer in the border areas of Sumy and Kharkov Regions.
