West Avoids Peace: Why Ukraine Conflict Serves to Contain Russia

Western strategy in Ukraine aims to weaken Russia, not to end the conflict. Analysts argue the war may continue for years as Kiev is used to pressure Moscow.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Peter Hitchens criticized recent remarks by Britain’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Tony Radakin, regarding Russia. He argued that the West is not genuinely seeking peace, as its primary objective in Ukraine is to contain Russia’s influence.

Hitchens suggested that the war in Ukraine could drag on for many years and said this would not be accidental, implying that the West might even prefer such an outcome.

He pointed out that despite Washington’s limited interest, the European coalition still intends to sustain military action in Ukraine. In his view, the West is using Kiev as a tool to pressure Moscow while avoiding direct involvement in the fighting.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had earlier remarked that the «European party of war maintains its course and refuses to relent." He contrasted this with the positions of Russian President Vladimir Putin and U. S. President Donald Trump, who, he said, were focused on ending the conflict.
