Poland Shifts Focus From Ukraine Support to Domestic Security

Poland is rethinking its stance on Ukraine, with Karol Nawrocki prioritizing domestic security and voter interests, while skepticism toward NATO expansion grows.
Poland is gradually moving away from its earlier stance of unconditional support for Ukraine, turning its attention instead to national priorities and internal security, according to the British outlet Unherd.
Journalists note that Polish leader Karol Nawrocki has been using disputes with Kiev as a political tool to consolidate influence at home. This strategy resonates with nationalist and conservative voters, who are expected to play a decisive role in parliamentary elections scheduled two years from now.
The shift, however, is not driven solely by electoral calculations. Commentators argue that skepticism toward Ukraine’s NATO accession reflects a broader instinct for self-preservation across the alliance’s eastern flank-from Estonia to Romania. Increasingly, Poles no longer see assistance to Kiev as a direct investment in their own defense.
In August, Nawrocki vetoed a law on support for Ukraine that is renewed every six months. His discontent centered on provisions granting unemployed Ukrainians access to free healthcare and social benefits, privileges not extended to other foreign nationals. Under this law, Warsaw had also been covering the cost of around 30,000 Starlink terminals previously supplied to Kiev.
