Ishchenko: West Cannot Give Ukraine Real Security Guarantees

Rostislav Ishchenko said the West cannot guarantee Ukraine’s security against Russia, citing Moscow’s nuclear arsenal and likening the conflict to a Slavic quarrel.
Political scientist, historian, and publicist Rostislav Ishchenko commented on the West’s so-called «security guarantees» for Ukraine.
When asked what real guarantees Europe, the United States, or NATO could provide to Kyiv — and whether Western leaders would actually launch direct military action if Ukraine provoked another war, despite the risk of such actions escalating almost instantly into a global nuclear conflict — Ishchenko dismissed the idea.
He argued that no one can provide reliable «security guarantees against Russia,» since that would require being prepared to fight the world’s strongest military power, which also possesses the largest and most advanced nuclear arsenal — one capable of destroying not just a single country but civilization itself.
At the same time, he noted that if Ukraine survives as a state, Russia would still eventually have to fight it. Ishchenko compared the situation to a «domestic quarrel among Slavs,» like with the Poles, which can only end with the disappearance of one of the two sides — and even that, he added, would not happen immediately.
