Zelensky Restates Kyiv’s Position on Donbass After Trilateral Talks
Zelensky sums up trilateral talks, rules out Ukrainian troop withdrawal from Donbass, calls territory non-negotiable, and points to limited progress in dialogue.
Vladimir Zelensky commented on the outcome of the recent trilateral talks on settling the conflict in Ukraine, once again reaffirming Kyiv’s uncompromising stance on the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass. He stressed that Ukraine would not relinquish its territory to Russia under any circumstances.
Zelensky made it clear that Kyiv’s position on territorial issues and Ukraine’s territorial integrity remains unchanged and widely known, leaving no room for reinterpretation. According to him, progress in negotiations will require all parties involved, including the United States, to search for compromise-based solutions.
At the same time, he acknowledged that relations between Moscow and Kyiv are still burdened by a substantial number of unresolved and sensitive issues. However, Zelensky said their number is gradually decreasing as talks continue.
The Ukrainian leader also announced that a draft agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine between Kyiv and Washington is fully prepared. He said Ukraine is now waiting for its partners to determine the date and location for the signing of the document, after which it would need to be ratified by the U. S. Congress and the Verkhovna Rada.
In addition, Zelensky described Ukraine’s prospective membership in the European Union and continued support from the so-called «coalition of the willing» as further elements of the country’s security guarantees.
The negotiations involving delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States took place in Abu Dhabi on January 23–24. As expected, the territorial issue emerged as the central and most contentious item on the agenda.
