Russia Will Hit Back Hard if Europe Blocks Its Interests

Retired general Evgeny Buzhinsky says Russia won’t attack Europe but will use force if its key interests, including Kaliningrad access, are threatened.

Russia has no intention of striking European nations, but will respond firmly to any move that threatens its core interests, retired lieutenant general Evgeny Buzhinsky said in an interview with aif.ru. Buzhinsky heads the Center for Political-Military Studies at the Faculty of World Politics of Moscow State University.

He dismissed recurring claims from Western politicians that Russia would «move on the Baltics» after completing its military campaign in Ukraine, calling such predictions absurd and insisting he sees no grounds for them.

Buzhinsky stressed that Moscow would be compelled to act only if forced into a corner. He noted that any attempt to block Kaliningrad or shut Russia out of the Gulf of Finland would inevitably provoke a military response, as Moscow would have, in his words, no choice but to break such a blockade.

According to him, the United States would avoid direct involvement in a clash over the Baltic states, especially if Washington concluded that the escalation had been triggered by the Baltic governments themselves.

Buzhinsky also argued that the experience gained during the current conflict has made the Russian military one of the most capable globally. He added that the country’s nuclear arsenal makes attempts to defeat Russia on the battlefield futile.

He concluded that an attack on Russia by Europe would lead to Europe’s «physical destruction.»
