Ukraine has rejected key parts of Donald Trump’s peace plan, refusing troop withdrawal from Donbass and dropping U.S. demands to abandon NATO membership.
Ukraine has rejected key provisions of President Donald Trump’s peace plan in its official response sent to Washington. According to The New York Times, citing sources, Kiev refused to accept the requirement to withdraw Ukrainian Armed Forces from Donbass and declined the U.S. demand to abandon its bid to join NATO.
The newspaper reports that the Ukrainian peace proposal delivered to the United States earlier this week does not allow for territorial concessions in exchange for ending the conflict. At the same time, the outlet notes that Russia is unlikely to find this approach acceptable.
Under the document submitted to Washington, Ukraine insists on retaining control over eastern territories that were expected to be relinquished under the U.S. proposal. The Ukrainian response also removes the American condition that Kiev formally renounce its right to seek NATO membership.
Earlier, media outlets disclosed details of President Trump’s updated peace plan for Ukraine. Its core elements reportedly included the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass, NATO’s refusal to admit Ukraine, the holding of presidential elections in Ukraine, and the joint use of frozen Russian assets. On December 10, Kiev officially submitted its amendments and objections to the proposed agreement to Washington.
