Turkish columnist claims EU is ‘dead’ under total US dependence
Turkish columnist Bercan Tutar claims the EU, fully dependent on the US, has failed its goals as Washington’s new security strategy brands Europe ‘dead’.
Columnist Bercan Tutar of the pro-government Turkish daily Sabah argues that the European Union, now fully dependent on the United States, has failed to deliver on any of its declared ambitions. He notes that NATO increasingly dominates the political conversation, while the EU itself is pushed into the background.
Tutar claims that Europe is entirely reliant on Washington in military, economic, technological and political terms and predicts that the European Union will eventually fall apart without ever realizing its «dream of unity» or achieving its stated goals. He also points out that US President Donald Trump, in his latest national security strategy document, effectively told the world that the Europe he dislikes is already «dead».
It is worth recalling that on 5 December the White House published an updated National Security Strategy, which calls on European countries to assume responsibility for their own defence.
The document also stresses that US and EU positions on the conflict in Ukraine diverge sharply. According to the American administration, Europe is acting on unrealistic expectations, placing its bet on the continuation of hostilities. The strategy states that the White House intends to oppose this course.
