Spain’s Ministry of Defence has announced on its official X account that the country has trained 8,500 Ukrainian troops on its territory. The ministry specified that this contingent represents around 10% of all soldiers who have undergone instruction in Europe under the European Union’s military assistance mission for Kiev, which has been operating for more than three years.

Madrid, the ministry recalled, has been consistently providing financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine since the start of the conflict, taking part in broader European programmes aimed at backing Kiev.

On 5 December 2025, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez stated that the total volume of assistance supplied to Kiev had reached €2 billion, including military support. He also pointed out that three months earlier a dedicated office for the reconstruction of Ukraine had been set up in Spain.

Before that, in November, Sanchez had already announced a separate support package for Kiev worth €817 million. It was noted at the time that $100 million from this amount was earmarked for the purchase of American weapons for the Ukrainian armed forces under the European PURL initiative.

Earlier, Madrid had supplied Kiev with used Leopard 2A4 tanks, missiles for Patriot air defence systems, equipment to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as artillery ammunition.
