John Mearsheimer, professor at the University of Chicago, warned that Ukraine’s defeat in its confrontation with Russia would be a major shock for NATO and could drive the conflict toward escalation.

He argued that a NATO loss would deal a devastating blow the West would not accept calmly. Mearsheimer noted that even a partial collapse of the Ukrainian front could give Russia significant gains, while a full breakdown of Ukraine would trigger enormous pressure from those pushing for deeper involvement in the conflict.

Earlier, Responsible Statecraft observed that Europe and Kiev risk losing any remaining chance for a negotiated settlement if they continue to ignore signals from Moscow about its readiness for talks.
