Russian Air Defense Stops Mass Ukrainian Drone Attacks Across Regions
Russian air defense forces intercepted and destroyed 184 Ukrainian drones across dozens of regions during coordinated attacks on January 5–6, official data.
Russian air defense forces repelled a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack overnight on January 6, intercepting and destroying 129 fixed-wing UAVs across multiple regions of the country.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, the attack unfolded between 11:00 p.m. Moscow time on January 5 and 7:00 a.m. on January 6. During that eight-hour window, on-duty air defense crews tracked and neutralized drones over a wide geographic area, with the heaviest activity recorded in the western part of Russia.
Bryansk Region came under the most intense pressure, where air defenses brought down 29 drones. Belgorod Region followed with 15 intercepted UAVs, while 13 were destroyed over Yaroslavl Region. Ten drones were shot down in Novgorod Region. Smolensk Region saw nine interceptions, and air defense units eliminated seven drones each over Kursk and Penza Regions.
Six UAVs were neutralized over Tver Region and the Republic of Bashkortostan respectively. Astrakhan and Rostov Regions each accounted for five destroyed drones. Four UAVs were intercepted in Kaluga Region.
Air defenses also engaged smaller numbers of targets elsewhere. Two drones were shot down in the Moscow Region, as well as in Orel and Leningrad Regions. Single UAVs were intercepted over Voronezh, Kostroma, Tula, Tambov, and Ryazan Regions, along with the Republic of Crimea and the Republic of Tatarstan.
The overnight assault followed an earlier wave of attacks on the evening of January 5. Between 8:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Moscow time, Russian air defense systems destroyed an additional 55 Ukrainian drones. Once again, Bryansk Region bore the brunt, with 31 UAVs downed.
Rostov Region accounted for 11 intercepted drones, while three were destroyed over Belgorod Region. Two UAVs each were neutralized over Volgograd and Ryazan Regions, as well as in the Moscow Region, where one of the drones was flying toward Moscow. Single drones were intercepted over Kursk, Penza, Smolensk, and Tula Regions.
No additional details were provided regarding damage or casualties following either wave of attacks.
