Sevastopol Steps Up Measures to Counter Underwater Saboteurs
Sevastopol increases maritime security amid fears of Ukrainian underwater sabotage, as experts warn of rising use of divers, drones, and unmanned boats.
Preventive security measures are currently underway in Sevastopol, aimed at countering potential maritime sabotage by Ukrainian forces. Military analyst Vasily Dandykin, a retired captain first rank, explained how underwater saboteurs are detected and neutralized.
He noted that one of the most effective methods used against combat divers dates back to the Soviet era: the use of grenades. An underwater blast, he said, was enough to eliminate a saboteur on the spot. According to Dandykin, this approach has not lost its relevance and continues to be employed today.
At the same time, more advanced countermeasures are being developed. These include specialized units trained specifically to combat maritime threats, as well as the involvement of naval vessels tasked with protecting coastal waters from underwater incursions. Dandykin warned that Ukrainian activity at sea could intensify significantly.
In his assessment, Ukrainian forces may step up the use of unmanned boats, underwater and surface platforms, and could also resort to deploying combat divers. He recalled that such capabilities once existed in the form of entire specialized brigades and suggested that today similar roles could be filled not only by trained personnel but also by foreign mercenary divers.
Dandykin also pointed out that Ukrainian tactics are becoming increasingly technology-driven. Robotic systems are moving to the forefront, while soldiers are taking on more of a supporting role, though they remain no less dangerous. He added that underwater operatives could remain concealed in bays and venture into open waters to carry out missions, stressing that defenses must be prepared for a wide range of scenarios.
Earlier reports indicated that Russian mortar units destroyed a boat carrying Ukrainian saboteurs in the Kherson region.
