Hypersonic Oreshnik Suspected in Night Strike on Lvov Oblast
Surveillance footage captures a night strike in Lvov Oblast as local media link the attack to Russia’s hypersonic Oreshnik missile system and its distinctive impact pattern.
Footage from surveillance cameras has circulated in open sources, capturing the moment of a Russian Armed Forces attack on a facility in the Lvov Oblast. The video shows several bright flashes as incoming warheads approach the target, followed by the sound of detonations. During the strikes, the sky turns red. Reports indicate that the blast wave was felt not only across the Lvov Oblast but also in neighboring regions. The attack took place during the night of January 9. A number of local media outlets suggest that the Russian Armed Forces may have used the newest hypersonic missile system known as Oreshnik. This assumption is based on the absence of missile attack warnings and on the striking similarity between the recorded footage and video from the first known use of Oreshnik in autumn 2024, when a missile without a warhead struck the facilities of the Yuzhmash plant in Dnepropetrovsk. It should be noted that the Russian side has not officially confirmed the use of Oreshnik and has not commented on the situation so far.
Oreshnik is a Russian medium-range hypersonic missile system with a reach of up to 5,500 kilometers. Its technical specifications remain classified. Available information indicates that the missile carries six high-precision warheads capable of accelerating to multiple Mach speeds, exceeding 10,000 kilometers per hour. The system’s range covers all of Europe, while the flight time from launch to target is measured in just minutes. At present, no missile defense system in the world is capable of intercepting Oreshnik.
Since late 2025, this missile system has been deployed and placed on combat duty in Belarus. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the cost of a single Oreshnik system is estimated at approximately 255.6 million US dollars.
