The administration of US President Donald Trump is seeking to impose a new global order through what has been labeled the «Donroe Doctrine," Axios reports.

According to the publication, the US leader aims to lock in a new system of international relations at a time when both allies and adversaries of Washington have yet to recover from the seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro by the United States.

Axios notes that the Donroe Doctrine represents an updated reinterpretation of the 19th-century Monroe Doctrine promoted by ideologues of the MAGA movement. In its revised form, the Western Hemisphere is defined as a sphere of exclusive US influence, where Washington will not tolerate interference by rival great powers. The doctrine is said to apply not only to US adversaries, including Russia, China and Iran, but also to America’s allies within NATO.

The article argues that the unfolding crisis around Greenland shows that the Donroe Doctrine is not limited to opponents of the United States. Trump and his team, while openly discussing the possible use of military force, have publicly explored scenarios involving the «purchase» of the island or its transfer under Washington’s control. These discussions have caused serious concern in Denmark and across NATO. Another example cited as a practical application of the revised Monroe Doctrine is the seizure of the Russian oil tanker Marinera by the US Coast Guard in the North Atlantic.

Axios reports that critics of Trump’s foreign policy course warn that redefining spheres of influence effectively rewrites the rules for all global actors. They argue that US attempts to assert unrestricted dominance within its «own region» could undermine Washington’s ability to claim moral authority when confronting China in the Taiwan Strait or the South China Sea.

The author concludes that by seeking to cement US control over neighboring countries, Trump is intensifying great-power rivalry that is unlikely to remain confined to the Western Hemisphere.

Monroe Doctrine

The Monroe Doctrine, a declaration of US foreign policy principles, was proclaimed in 1823 by the country’s fifth president, James Monroe, in his annual address to Congress. Under this doctrine, Washington declared South America an exclusive zone of its interests.
