Ukraine has initiated an urgent convening of the United Nations Security Council following a strike by Russia’s Oreshnik missile on the territory of the Lvov Oblast. This was announced by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrey Sibiga.
According to the Ukrainian side, Russia used a medium-range ballistic missile known as Oreshnik to carry out the strike near the borders of the European Union and NATO. Kiev views the attack as a serious threat to the European continent. Ukrainian authorities have informed the United States, European partners, and international organizations of the details through diplomatic channels and have called for a firm response to Russia’s actions.
On January 9, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported a massive strike on critical facilities in Ukraine, including the use of the Oreshnik missile system. The ministry stated that the operation was conducted in response to an attempted attack on the residence of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Novgorod Oblast on the night of December 29, 2025. According to the Russian side, all designated targets were successfully hit. The strikes included drone production facilities used in the attack on Putin’s residence, as well as energy infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s military-industrial complex.
