US President Donald Trump has ordered the preparation of a plan to establish control over Greenland, the Daily Mail reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

According to the newspaper’s interlocutors, a successful military operation in Venezuela significantly strengthened the position of advocates of a hardline foreign policy in Washington. Encouraged by this outcome, they are pushing for swift action regarding Greenland, arguing that any delay could open the door for Russia or China to make their own moves in the region.

Sources cited by the Daily Mail say Trump instructed the Joint Special Operations Command to develop an invasion plan. At the same time, the Joint Chiefs of Staff are said to be resisting the initiative, warning that such an operation would be illegal and would not receive approval from the US Congress.

The report notes that a decision of this kind could trigger serious tensions between Washington and UK Prime Minister Kir Starmer and could effectively place the future of NATO at risk. One diplomatic cable mentioned in the article outlines a worst-case scenario in which the alliance could face internal collapse.

Some European officials believe that this outcome may be an unspoken objective of the radical wing of the MAGA movement close to Trump. Since Congress would not allow a direct US withdrawal from NATO, taking control of Greenland could, in their view, push European countries toward abandoning the alliance on their own. Under this logic, the move would represent the simplest path for Trump to achieve NATO’s disintegration.

Earlier, the Telegraph reported that the European Union is considering sanctions against US companies if Washington does not abandon its claims to Greenland. As an alternative, the United Kingdom has been holding consultations with other European states on the possible deployment of a NATO mission on the island.
