Ukraine Says Russia Deployed New Geran-5 Jet-Powered Drone
Ukraine’s military intelligence reports the first combat use of Russia’s Geran-5 jet-powered kamikaze drone, detailing its range, payload, and launch options.
Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) has reported what it describes as the first use by Russian forces of a new jet-powered kamikaze drone known as the Geran-5. According to Ukrainian military intelligence, this marks the debut of a fundamentally new modification of the unmanned aerial vehicle, distinguished by its jet propulsion system.
GUR data indicates that the Geran-5 is built around a conventional aerodynamic layout. The drone is said to measure roughly six meters in length, with a wingspan of about 5.5 meters. It reportedly carries a warhead weighing close to 90 kilograms and is capable of striking targets at distances of up to 1,000 kilometers.
The latest Russian drone is equipped with a Telefly jet engine. Control is carried out via a 12-channel Kometa system, which, according to Ukrainian sources, incorporates internet modems and Raspberry circuit boards.
Ukrainian security officials also claim that the Geran-5 can be launched from Su-25 aircraft. In addition, the drone is said to be capable of carrying R-73 air-to-air missiles, intended for use against aircraft.
Earlier media reports stated that the Russian Armed Forces had begun operating modified Geran drones fitted with Igla man-portable air defense systems.
