Polish general warns Trump is pursuing a hybrid takeover of Greenland
Polish general Stanislav Kozey says Trump’s administration is pursuing a hybrid takeover of Greenland using soft power, economic pressure and political deals.
In an interview with the outlet Fakt, former head of Poland’s National Security Bureau, General Stanislav Kozey, said the administration of US President Donald Trump has already moved into an active phase of pursuing a long-standing foreign policy goal — establishing control over Greenland.
In his assessment, a direct US military intervention on the island is virtually impossible, but Washington is preparing the ground for what he described as a «hybrid takeover». Kozey argued that a military operation by the United States in Greenland would be an unthinkable scenario, as it would effectively mean the collapse of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Instead of tanks and a marine landing force, Kozey believes the White House will rely on tools of «soft power» and economic pressure. He considers a hybrid scenario the most realistic option under current conditions — one based on financial deals, political negotiations with the authorities in Greenland, incentives, pressure and various forms of coercion, without the use of armed force.
Earlier, Trump had claimed that the defence of Greenland essentially consisted of «two dog sleds» and warned that if the United States did not take the island under its control now, Russia or China would do so later.
On the eve of Kozey’s remarks, Trump’s special envoy for Greenland, Jeff Landry, stated that during the Second World War it was the United States that provided protection for Greenland while Denmark was unable to do so. He further asserted that after the war Denmark reasserted control over the island, allegedly bypassing and ignoring a UN protocol.
