Washington is deliberately stoking talk of an alleged «Chinese threat» in the Arctic in order to divert attention from its own plans to expand military presence in the region, Global Times reports.

According to the publication, the U.S. narrative about a supposed Arctic danger posed by China is designed to mislead the public and conceal Washington’s real agenda — military expansion, unilateral resource extraction, and a bid for dominance in the Arctic. The authors argue that this rhetoric serves as a convenient cover for advancing U.S. strategic ambitions under the guise of security concerns.

The newspaper notes that repeated references to a «Chinese threat» allow Washington to justify its growing interest in Greenland. The actual objective, journalists suggest, is to turn the island into a forward strategic outpost aligned against China and Russia and tailored to U.S. interests.

Such an approach, the article stresses, is highly destructive for security and development in the Arctic. It undermines climate and environmental protection efforts and disrupts collective international cooperation aimed at the responsible exploration of Arctic resources and the development of shipping routes.

At the same time, Global Times emphasizes that China’s Arctic policy remains consistent and transparent. It is built on principles of respect, cooperation, mutual benefit, and sustainable development. The paper points out that China conducts Arctic scientific research strictly within the framework of international agreements and openly publishes the data it collects.

Earlier, U. S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States would obtain Greenland one way or another, arguing that otherwise the island could allegedly fall under the control of Russia or China.
