A US Air Force F-35A fighter jet disappeared from radar off the coast of Japan near the city of Aomori after reportedly sending a distress signal.

According to Flightradar24 data, a Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II flying from the northern part of the Sea of Japan vanished from tracking screens at around 06:09 Moscow time. Before disappearing, the aircraft transmitted the general emergency code 7700, a standard signal indicating an in-flight emergency.

The F-35A is a variant of the fifth-generation multirole F-35 Lightning II fighter developed by Lockheed Martin. The aircraft made its first flight in 2006 and entered service with the US Air Force in 2016. The model is designed to strike both air and ground targets. One of the F-35A’s key features is its ability to carry B61-12 thermonuclear bombs, making it an important element of US strategic strike forces.
