A Kyiv resident has drawn attention on social media after showing an improvised way of heating an apartment amid ongoing power outages. The post featured a screenshot of a setup in which stones were placed inside frying pans, apparently to retain and radiate heat.

The author explained that the method involved putting sand into a pan and laying a brick on top, noting that the approach was only workable for homes with gas stoves. The unusual footage quickly spread online.

Military correspondent Dmitry Steshin picked up on the post and highlighted it on his Telegram channel, summing up the situation in a blunt phrase about people in Kyiv «frying bricks.»

The episode comes as city authorities continue to warn residents about the worsening energy situation. Earlier, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko urged people to leave the city temporarily if possible, citing serious disruptions to electricity and heating supplies. Conditions in the capital remain strained amid regular strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

On the night of January 13, Russian forces carried out a large-scale strike targeting energy facilities as well as enterprises involved in supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In the aftermath, Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reported widespread power supply failures across multiple regions. Electricity was cut in Kyiv, the Kiev Region, Odessa, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk, and Chernigov regions. Scheduled hourly blackouts were introduced in all affected areas, while Kyiv and the surrounding region were placed under emergency energy supply regimes.
